s. m, Gamboge. A product of various plants of the Nat. Ord Guttiferæ amongst which are Garcinia morella, Cambogia Cochineusis, Gambogia gutta, Hypericum pomiferum. Siam and Cochin China are the great source of production. A Gamboge tree abounds on the Ghats of the Canara country and the Wynuad (C. tinctoria), and there is another variety in Ceylon Hebradendron Cambogoides. Gamboge is imported into the Punjab, and is met with in fragments as the "pipe" or "roll" Gamboge of commerce medicinally it is used as a hydrogogue purgative, the native name "concrete extract of Rhubarb" indicates the idea prevalent that it is obtained from Rhubarb. It does not appear to be used here as a pigment. It is the chief ingredient in "Morrison's pills" which are imported into China by the hundred weight.
