NAJAR

s. f. (M.), ) A tax of rupees on each kámil well, the name is derived from the upper cross-beam of a well. A kámil well was one with 8 yokes of bullocks, and proportionate allowance was made for every yoke wanting to make up this number:—najar lagá deṉí, lagáuṉí, v. a. To cast an evil eye upon, to regard with evil intent:—najar laggṉí, kháṉí, khájáṉí, v. n. To be influenced by the Evil Eye:—najar mární, v. a. To look at, to see:—najar miláuṉí, v. a. To look full in the face:—najar muharrir, s. m. (M.) This was a quarter of a seer per maund on all crops, and was levied when the crop was weighed. The cess was of long standing. Diwan Sawan Mal confiscated it and credited it to Government:—najar niáj, s. m. Gifts, oblations:—najar paiṉí, v. n. To happen to see, to fall under one's notice:—najar páuṉí, v. n. To cast one's eyes on, to look at:—najar rakkhṉí, v. n. To look after; to keep watch; to have one's eyes on, to be intent on:—najar wichch, ad. In sight, in view:—najar wichch rakkhṉá, v. n. To keep in sight, to keep under one's own control:—najar waṭṭú, baṭṭú, s. m. A kind of charm to avert the Evil Eye; i. q. Bajra baṭtú:—sapp dá kháhdá bache, najar dá kháhdá ná bache. The one bitten by a snake escapes, he that is affected by the Evil Eye escapes not.—Prov.
