s. m, ee (Alnus sp., Nat. Ord. Betulaceæ) which is found in the Punjab Himalaya and a few miles into the plains in the Bari Doab and in the Peshawar Valley, it is handsome and attains a large size. The leaves appear to be sometimes used as fodder. The twigs are employed for binding loads and parts of bridges. The wood is white, (said to be weak), but is used for bedsteads, and for the hooked stick of rope bridges. The bark is employed for tanning and dyeing;—A handsome tree (Ulmus integrifolia, Nat. Ord. Ulmaceæ) rare in the Punjab Siwalik tract up to the Bias, and seen planted in the plains about Delhi. The wood is light, white, and rather apt to splinter, but in parts of India is used for carts, door-frames, spoons, and in the Punjab is employed for roof planks. Near Delhi the bruised leaves of this tree are applied to boils.
