The divine creative power at first thought of as the mere will of the Creator, became a separate deity and identified with the wives of the Hindu Triad, Saraswati being the Shaktí of Brahma, Lakshmi of Vishnu and Durga of Shiva. Sometimes eight Shaktí goddesses are reckoned, sometimes nine. Others reckon fifty Shaktís of Vishnu beside Lakshmi and fifty of Shiva, beside Durga. The female nature of Shiva is said to have become two fold one half white Asita, the other half black, Sita, each of these became manifold, those of the white or mild nature being Saraswati, Lakshmi, &c., those of the black Kálí, Durga, &c.:—shaktí máṉ, a. Powerful, able:—sarb shaktímáṉ, a. All powerful, omnipotent (a title of God.)
