SHAHÍD
ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਰਥ2
s. m, martyr, any Sikh or Muhammadan killed in battle is so called, one who is killed fighting with infidels (in case of Muhammadans), one who is killed in fighting with Muhammadans (a Sikh term); used also of one who is killed when bravely facing a foe even of his own religion. The word is connected with shahádat, witness, testimony. A shahíd is therefore a "witness." The analogy between the English martyr, Greek marter a witness is interesting:—shahídgaṇj, s. m. The burial place of martyrs (a Sikh term):—shahíd hoṉá, v. n. To become martyr, to be killed; to fall in love:—shahíd karná, v. a. To kill any Muhammadan or Sikh who is fighting for the sake of religion, to make a martyr of any one; to fascinate with love.
