s. f, Dim. of Sajjá; an impure carbonate of soda, manufactured from various plants Anabasis multiflora; Caroxylon fœtidum, Griffithii, Salsola kali, Nat. Ord. Salsolaceæ). The plants are burned in special pits. The purest Sajjí appears as a liquid which runs away into earthen vessels. From the ashes, coarser kinds of Sajjí are prepared. The centres of manufacture are Sirsa, Gugaira and Jhang. Even the purest kind contains a great deal of foreign matter, such as Sodium and Calcium Sulphate, Sodium Sulphide, Sodium and Potassinm Chloride, Sodium Sulpho-Cyanide and ferro Cyanide, Silica, Clay and an immense quantity of organic matter. The best variety is termed loṭṭá sajjí (Gugaira), Chuwá sajji (Sirsa), the second kaṇgan khár sajjí (Gugaira) búthá sajjí (Sirsa), the third or most impure is called kháṙá sajji (Sirsa) and bhútni sajjí "devil's sajjí" in Gugaira. Phul sajjí, is another variety. Sajjí is identical with the Barilla or Barillor of Europe. This denotes a fine Soda manufactured by the burning of Salsola Soda, Saliconnia herbacea and other allied species which grow by the sea shore. The manufacture is carried on in the Spanish Seaports and at Teneriffe. Barilla forms an important item in British import trade, it occurs in hard porous masses of a speckled brown colour.
